FAQ

What is ceremonial grade matcha?
Ceremonial grade matcha is the highest quality of matcha available, made from the youngest, most tender leaves of the first harvest. It has a smooth, rich flavour, vibrant green colour, and is traditionally used in Japanese tea ceremonies. At NOMU, we source only the finest ceremonial-grade matcha from Japan to bring you an authentic matcha experience.

How is matcha made?
Matcha is made by carefully shading green tea plants before harvesting to boost chlorophyll levels, which gives the matcha its vibrant green colour. After harvesting, the leaves are steamed, dried, and then ground into a fine powder using stone mills. The entire leaf is consumed when you drink matcha, unlike other teas where only the brewed liquid is consumed.

Is your matcha organic?
Yes! NOMU matcha is certified organic by both USDA Organic and Japan Organic standards, meaning it is grown without the use of synthetic pesticides or fertilisers. We are committed to providing you with pure, high-quality matcha that's good for you and the planet.

Does matcha contain caffeine?
Yes, matcha contains caffeine, but unlike coffee, it also contains L-Theanine, an amino acid that promotes a calm, focused energy. The combination of these compounds gives you a more balanced, sustained energy boost without the jitters or crash you might get from coffee.

Where do you ship to?
Currently, NOMU only ships within the UK. We hope to expand our shipping options in the future, so stay tuned!

How should I store my matcha?
To preserve its freshness and flavour, store your matcha in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Once opened, it's best to keep it tightly sealed in an airtight container and refrigerate it to maintain its vibrant colour and taste.

How do I prepare matcha?
We recommend using a bamboo whisk (chasen) to whisk 2-3 grams (a heaped teaspoon) of matcha with warm water (around 70-80°C, not boiling) until it’s frothy, then add it to your milk of choice.

Is matcha suitable for vegans?
Yes, matcha is naturally vegan and gluten-free, making it a great option for a wide range of dietary preferences.
